We Say...
Doleful Lions open this release with a bang. “Blazing Sun Rising Over the Mountains of the East” is a track ambitious in both title and sound, and manages to completely capture the titular vision in its lyricless, colorful, electronic expansiveness. Doleful Lions also display a continued willingness to experiment, often pairing poignant strings and haunting vocals with tricked out beats and keyboard loops to a wondrous effect as is the case on “Magic Without Tears” and the 8-minute opus “Winfield Walker.” However, this indie set also prove successful with the seemingly simple. “Aftermath” features lead singer Jonathan Scott crooning mournfully to a few minor chords, and closes 7 in a manner that will smash your heart to bits, but still leave you yearning for more.
