  • They Say...

Saxophonist Alex Foster and pianist Michael Wolff have played together in several settings through the years, usually under the leadership of Wolff. For this set, they perform a set of duets consisting of four Wolff originals, three by Foster and a song apiece from Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. Both Foster (who is heard on tenor, alto and soprano) and Wolff play quite well although far too many of the songs are introspective ballads. A bit more mood and tempo variation would have improved this set but overall the music is satisfying and thought-provoking.
