  • They Say...

This set allows one to hear the very distinctive pianist Errol Garner in his early days. Four tracks are with bassist John Levy and drummer George de Hart in 1945, but the lion's share is with bassist John Simmons and drummer Alvin Stoller from 1949. The medium-tempo pieces are the most enjoyable with Garner's slightly behind-the-beat right hand echoing his on-the-beat left hand. The ballads can sometimes get a bit overly rhapsodic but are still enjoyable. It is no wonder that Garner remained popular for decades without needing to adjust or water down his style.
