  • We Say...

Too often the term "legend" is bandied about loosely, but it can be truthfully applied to Nigeria's late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, arguably the best-known African musician in history. His politically charged themes and militant outspokenness won him both mass popularity and governmental animosity (resulting in numerous arrests) in his homeland for three decades. With the help of drummer Tony Allen, Kuti designed Afrobeat, a uniquely propulsive brand of funk bubbling with tough polyrhythms and rife with extended solos and provocative yet deeply soulful exhortations. This album contains three such extended, trance-inducing jams that nicely represent the sound he purveyed throughout his career. In "Roforofo Fight" blistering contrapuntal horn charts steamroll over deep-sea groove, propelling solo saxophone improvisations. The secret weapon, however, was Fela's sense of dynamics, as he masterfully removed and added the horns to frame the frontline action, whether it was one of his acidic sax solos or his incendiary vocals.
