  • They Say...

Though far from a household name, even among reggae fans, Michael Prophet is one of the more impressive singers to have straddled the roots and dancehall periods. His early work for superstar roots producer Yabby You was very well received, but he really established a name for himself with the more dancehall-oriented albums that came later, some of which were recorded with Henry "Junjo" Lawes. This very nice (if rather skimpy) program consists of tracks produced by Lawes and Delroy Wright, all of them recorded at the famous Channel One studio and all of them backed by the High Times Band. Prophet is in very fine voice here, delivering roots anthems like "Back Off" and, especially, "2000 Years" with authority and grace, and even dipping briefly into his lovers-rock bag for the sweet-natured "Tonight, Tonight." This is some of the best of his post-Yabby You work, though his more dancehall-oriented recordings are also worth seeking out.
