  • We Say...

Many people might assume that the Pacific Northwest music scene dried up when MTV left Seattle in search of newer trends to commodify. But the Emerald City's Dirtnap Records has been releasing a slew of exciting new albums from Pacific Northwest bands who embody the spirit of '70s punk and keyboard-driven new wave (before it became a sitcom punchline) and Dirtnap Across the Northwest is the result of that work. Lead-off track "Join the Professionals" by the Epoxies is a retro romp reminiscent of the days when punk rock and new wave were more closely aligned. The Exploding Hearts' "Sniffing Glue," with its faux-Brit sneering, could've arrived straight outta London circa '77. The Hunches throw a small change-up with "Like I Could Die," whose romantic yearnings tread closer to Mick 'n' Keef than the fuzz-rock that typifies their work. The Spits wrap things up with "Comp Song," a middle-finger taunt that insults various labelmates' music, personalities and other things better left unmentioned on a family web site; it sounds like Public Enemy as recorded with a Casio keyboard and a 4-track recorder. Dirtnap Across the Northwest proves that the Pacific Northwest is still a hotbed of great music — so feel free to leave the flannel and Doc Martens in the closet.
