Summary

Lily is looking forward to her upcoming summer vacation at the beach, but then World War II arrives, and everything changes. Her father goes overseas to fight, and Lily is left at home with her bossy grandmother. Her concern for her father's safety is made more difficult by the fact that her best summer friend is moving away, and the only kid in the neighborhood is Albert, a war refugee from Hungary. But just as things look bleakest, the two form an unlikely friendship.

Quotes from the Critics

"The sensitive characterizations are true to a ten-year-old point of view, and the personalities of Lily and Albert and even the distant Margaret are clearly presented....This is a fine piece of historical fiction that evokes a time and place without sacrificing or taking advantage of its characters' emotional lives." - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"With Ms. Giff's usual easygoing language and swift, short paragraphs, the impact of the war on an American child is brilliantly told." - New York Times Book Review

"Both evocative and provocative, this gentle novel presents the ripples of world war in a child-sized way." - San Francisco Book Review
