Summary

C Street

By: Jeff Sharlet

Narrarated by: Jeremy Guskin

In Jeff Sharlet's bestselling book, The Family, he wrote about the "C Street House," a Washington, D.C., Christian fellowship home shared by a number of conservative politicians. In the summer of 2009, the house became infamous as the center of sex scandals involving three of its residents: Senator John Ensign, Governor Mark Sanford, and Congressman Chip Pickering.

Sharlet is the leading expert on "the Family," and his undercover research and investigative work answers some of the country's biggest questions: how political fundamentalism endures in America; why, despite the collapse of the old Christian Right, it is as big a threat to democracy as ever before; and where, in a time of political upheaval and culture wars, fundamentalist politicians really intend to lead the country.

A juicy, terrifying exploration of a hush-hush conservative operation
For lefty conspiracy theorists, now may be the perfect time to listen to C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy, given that Republicans have recently gained a majority in Congress. Jeff Sharlett, author of The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, goes deeper into the shadows of the far right as he explores the hush-hush conservative operation whose goal is to ultimately spread Christianity via God’s chosen (ie: American, right-wing, conservative) leaders by encouraging, for instance, the spread of religion in the United States military.

The juiciest details lie in the way C Street either backs or abandons its leaders who are led astray by carnal proclivities; the most disturbing section claims that members of C Street support leaders abroad who advocate for the elimination of homosexuality. What’s especially frightening is that Sharlet has clearly done his research: he includes notes from the Billy Graham Library archives and first-person accounts of the Family's influence in Libya and Uganda (he even chatted with the author of the infamous "Kill the Gays" bill.) The book may not be for readers of all political beliefs or religious persuasions but for those who believe Washington, D.C. has more dark corners than we’re led to believe, this will be an eye-opening, insidious thriller.
